John (Jack) Machin

John Machin (known as Jack) was born on 12 September 1938 in the western district town of Warrnambool, and was the youngest of three boys. He attended the local primary school before his family moved to a share farm, first in the Western District, then later settling in the Gippsland area. It was here that Jack began driving the family's farm truck at just twelve years of age. In 1956 at age eighteen, after moving to Noble Park; Jack bought his first truck, a Fargo Semi trailer, in partnership with his brother, Noel. Together, they carried general freight locally and around other country areas. After selling this truck Jack and Noel bought a Commer and began carting interstate, mainly to Sydney in the early 1960's. The brothers then invested in a new Commer and continued to cart interstate for nearly the next three years. When the partnership was dissolved, Jack carted sawdust in a Chev for another two years. After leaving the sawdust industry, Jack sold the Chev; buying an international tip truck to assist with construction work. He was then later employed by a timber company, carting timber furniture for seven years. For a short time, he operated a backhoe before buying another tip truck, this time carting garden supplies. Jack's last job was carting fibre glass supplies in the boating and transport industries; using both a Bedford J3 and an Isuzu. At this point, his son Barrie joined Jack in the business; the two of them buying three Isuzu's and a skip truck. When Jack retired, Barrie continued to operate the business until his own retirement many years later. In total, Jack was in the Transport Industry for 43 years, operating over 20 transport vehicles.
