Brian McFadyen

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2010.
Brian (Barney) McFadyen was born in Penshurst, Vic, in 1941, and left school at 13 to start work fencing with his father. In 1959 he started driving a Leyland Comet for J W Ewing, carrying stock from the Western District to Geelong and Melbourne. Later he drove a 336 Long Bonnet Benz, certainly the truck of the day, making the driver feel like "King of the Road".
In 1961 Barney moved to Warrnambool and drove for Barton's Livestock Transport carrying drought stock with a Leyland Comet with 1½ decks from Bulla Downs and Bourke to adjistment paddocks in Forbes, and a AEC Mandator carting stock from the Dubbo area to various Melbourne abattoirs. Barney recalls having to keep track of which state you were in. Over the next few years Barney drove for Johnson's Transport, Warrnambool with interstate cartage of coffee to Sydney and chocolate back to Melbourne, followed by a stint with Alan Howard & Co driving a Kenworth, with a 335 Cummins, with Alex Taranto ferrying both meat from Warwick and frozen chickens from Newcastle to destinations in Melbourne. In 1973 Barney purchased his first truck, a 760 Dodge and subbied for Hovey's Transport before starting a 33 year work association with M C Herd in Geelong, carrying tallow and meat and bone meal twice daily to Melbourne. During this time Barney bought several trucks including a C1800 Inter with a Perkins, a Louisville 8000 with a 3208 Caterpillar and lastly, a 1991 Mack Econodyne.In 2007 Barney retired, but still likes to keep his "hand on the wheel" with part-time delivery of trucks to Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.Barney and his wife Margie live in Leopold Vic, and in recent years he has taken up working with recycled timber transforming it into beautiful cupboards.
