Roger Preston

Roger Preston started out driving trucks in his teenage years whilst working as a jackaroo in Outback NSW. A 14 year stint as a Police Officer in country NSW followed before Roger ventured into the long distance transport industry in 1974. Encouragement and assistance were given by Dudley and Ray Miller (Sydney Mt Isa Transport) and Don Campitelli seeing Roger buy his first Mack which serviced Mt Isa and Darwin from his home town of Sydney.

In December 1974, Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin and the need arose to provide building materials to the reconstruction program. Roger worked for Harry Daniels delivering building materials to Burns Philp in Darwin and eventually took on the run in his own right after Harry passed away. Sydney to Darwin became his niche and from small beginnings a substantial business grew.

The volumes of freight increased with Roger updating his truck to a V8 Mack to tow Road Train loads of building products from James Hardie, Weyerhauser, Acrow and Tubemakers to name a few. Heavy loads required heavy gear to withstand the rough roads of the outback with a fair bit of corrugated dirt being the norm in the 70's.

In later years, Roger worked in management roles in various freight companies and whilst retired these days, can still be coaxed to jump behind the wheel to make a mile. His family always say that Roger is at his happiest when he has to be somewhere else.
