Graham & Walter Richers

Richers Transport Pty Ltd had its humble origins in Maryborough back in 1935 when Mr Walter Richers was working for a local ice vendor delivering to homes in the district. Maryborough was a small town then and times were tough in the era just before the Second World War. When the ice vendor ran into financial difficulties Mr Richers was given the truck,  a T Model Ford, in lieu of wages and the rest, as they say, is history. Walter Richers delivered ice in the early hours of the morning which left the truck free for the rest of the day. Keen to make a success of the opportunity before him he set about finding other work for the truck that could be carried out during the rest of the day.
Graham Richers, the son of Walter, proudly owns and operates the company today. Walter passed away 23 years ago and Graham remembers him as a great mentor and hard worker leaving him in good stead to take over as managing director. Graham's two sons now work in the business, Matthew in the sales division and Tom learning all about logistics as a driver. They are both involved in management and administration in preparation for the day the third generation of the family will make their mark on the road transport industry and the family business. Richers Transport Pty Ltd operates with a fleet of 350 units including 90 prime-movers and 200 trailers making up a wide variety of combinations to suit any type of loading. The ultra modern immaculate fleet, all painted in Richers green and gold livery, includes 22 Macks, 16 Freightliners, 16 Western Stars, 10 Sterlings, 9 International Eagles and several Mercedes Benz, Ivecos and Scanias. Collectively they travel over 13.5 million kilometres annually. Richers run everything from rigid trucks to single and B-Double combinations. Graham Richers believes his customers are the key determinants of quality and their needs and expectations form the basis of how he manages his company. In 1997 Richers Transport integrated TruckSafe into their operations. Richers also train both their managers and drivers in fatigue and maintenance management practices through the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (NHVAS). These accreditations recognise operators who have good safety and other systems in place and are a primary component in meeting Graham Richers objective of striving for excellence in all that he does. Customers are now, as they always have been, an important focus. You never know what the next phone call will bring. Richers Transport has depots all over south east Queensland and have collection points in many other destinations. The depot in Maryborough is on the same site that Walter Richers operated from in 1936. Graham Richers employs 200 people across his seven sites and gears all aspects of his business and risk management procedures towards attaining optimum safety for his drivers and employees and for all road users in Australia. Graham Richers personal motto is the"4H" rule: 'Be happy, honest, hungry and humble' and he looks forward to managing the challenges of the future including his own retirement and the third generation following him into the business.
