Augustus Stupuras
Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2011.
Augustus Stupuras was born on April 22nd 1924 in Lithuania, a country in Northern Europe situated along the south eastern shore of the Baltic Sea. After the horror of World War II, Augustus left Europe with his wife Anastasia and son Victor in 1949 with little more than the clothes on their backs. They headed for a better life in the land of opportunity and settled in Bathurst located on the banks of the Macquarie River.
In 1950, with a growing family, Augustus moved to Albury, NSW where he worked on the Hume Weir and began driving heavy machinery and vehicles.Through hard work and dedication Augustus purchased his first truck in 1954; a 1951 Ford and began carrying cars. By 1960 Augustus had diversified and was running 4 trucks, carrying everything from cars to Kelloggs between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.Over the years many long hours were spent behind the wheel of the Ford, and later a Valcan, BMC, Commers and Volvos. In 1983 Augustus started working for CUBICO, a company with which he spent 13 faithful years before retiring in 1996.With the lure of driving a big rig up the open road, 3 out of 5 of Augustus' sons followed in his footsteps. Sons Victor, Dennis and John continue to drive today and never tire of hearing the many stories of early trucks and primitive roads a far cry from today's powerful trucks and modern freeways.
