Greg Spargo

Inducted into the Shel.l Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2010

Greg Spargo began his driving career with Brisbane Car Carriers as a 21 year old transplant from Bacchus Marsh. He decided trucking was the life for him.

He was put in a Commer Knocker and given a job carting cars between Melbourne and Brisbane. Greg then spent some years on the east coast run with both express and general freight haulage before he then moved onto the east-west run.

Over the years Greg has driven cattle trains throughout north Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia, chemical tankers throughout Western Australia, and moved general freight in roadtrains across the country. Greg has driven for the mining industry in Western Australia, including Koolan Island where he drove an Acco for 12 months. Greg spent nine years in fly-in, fly-out positions in the north west, which also saw him hauling gold ore in quad side tippers.

Driving road trains was something Greg had been doing since he was 24 years old, but nothing had prepared him for driving one underground, a very different experience, again in the north-west. Earthmoving equipment was another chance to broaden his horizons and he spent several years operating excavators and earth moving equipment in general. He also undertook a wide variety of other jobs including moving pressure tankers loaded with lime, cement or even baker's flour. Yet another different driving experience Greg enjoyed was driving fridge vans up and down the east coast.

Over the years Greg has driven a wide variety of trucks from a Commer Knocker through to the latest Kenworth and Mack models in a driving career that has lasted 35 years and taken him from one end of the country to the other.
