Frank Turner

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2010.

Frank Turner was bought up on a wheat, fat lamb and grazing property in the Riverina area of New South Wales. He was married in 1954 and within a few years both he and his wife decided they would like to get into the trucking industry.

When a stock and general carrying business in Condobolin came up for sale, they purchased it. In 1970 Frank had a fall from a load of wool and injured his back. The doctor told him he had to find something easier to do. Within two years the call of the road got him and he was back driving trucks again.

Frank then did a stint in Queensland hauling for the mines and then spent seventeen years hauling grain. Deciding he wanted a change of pace, Frank then operated a hotel in Somerset until once again the call of the road became too strong. He did some steel cartage for BHP out of Newcastle to Port Kembla and then went back to grain carting. Frank recalls the best bloke he subbied to was Manns Transport in Goondiwindi but many blokes, who knew Frank on the road, remember him too as a good bloke ready to share a laugh or a helping hand at any-time.

Frank had a heart attack in 2003 and once again was told by the doctor to take things easy. There have been a lot of changes in Frank's 52 years on the road and he says most of the changes have been for the good but the camaraderie of the old days is just not there like it used to be. Frank was known on the road as a bloke who was always at the ready to give a hand. He was known to his mates and drivers as Arab. He says he has few regrets and would do it all again if he had the chance.
