Allen Train

Inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at Reunion 2005.

Allen James Train was born at Berami Creek, in the upper Hunter regions of NS in 1914.  His driving life started at the age of 14, when he drove his father's truck from Bermai Creek to Denman, picking up milk from the dairy farmers, to drop at the milk factory and taking the empties back to the farm, along with the groceries, mail and any messages from town.
Later on, his father purchased a new WA 22 White tipper to work for Thiess Bros. At the open cut coal mine in Musswellbrook.  It was there he first met The Thompson Bos., BIl and Wes, Ruben Lyons and Jim Finlay from the Hawkesbury District.Together, they decided to start a company, hauling sand from the Hawkesbury and Nepean Rivers to concrete plants in the Sydney area.  This is how Road Freighters was started on the 8th August 1946.  Four WA 20 Whites were purchased with bogie tipping trailers.  They were the first in the industry in NSW.  Over the years, the business diversified into interstate haulage carrying general freight to Melbourne.Later, they won a contract with AWA carting televisions to Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.  Allen also held the Dexion delivery to the same three states for a number of years, along with Campbell Bros.  Detergents on the Sydney to Brisbane run.  In 1966 Allen gave interstate away and went back to sand and gravel supplies which he is still operating wit a fleet of 12 vehicles in 2005.  He is 91 years old and still has many stories to tell about his days on the road and the transport industry.
